Spot the Designer - Laura Moisa / Romania
What did you want to be when you were a child?
A doctor, obviously.
When have you started creating jewelry? How did this passion come about?
I was always attracted by design and fine arts. I created a few interior design projects but they did not satisfy my desire to have something done by my hands or by my own mind. I was always waiting to free my soul and let the inspiration come to me. And it did. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic I realized that creating jewelry makes me happy and that the possibilities are endless. So - because the timing was perfect, without telling anyone, I gathered my will and resources and I started all that was about to become Allegra's Jewelry Collection: a small collection of assembled jewelries, a website, a company and the promotion. But I felt that this was not enough: at the beginning of 2022 I started the silver jewelry classes at Assamblage and I took a marketing classes. The courage began to grow and the inspiration as well. I was free to do whatever my mind was telling me to do. I am at the beginning, but the inspiration seams limitless.
What was your first project or significant piece for you and from what point of view?
The first significant piece of jewelry I created was my first SILVER piece: a necklace with flowers - my signature piece (named 'Flowers of Ice') - that comes also in leather. During the creation process I’ve dreamt some of the procedures... I did not know how to do some of them but I did some research and learned more about it. I had a lot of courage and I did not stop until it was finished. I never panicked, I never said it was hard. I just knew I had to do it. When it was finished, I was asked never to sell it because it was priceless.
How do you charge your batteries? What other passions and creative interests do you have?
I really like to read, but jewelry comes first as the perfect way to relax myself. I like to travel and see the world. I like to hang out with my close friends and most of all - listen to music - this really recharges me. I also like to relax in nature - because nature sends me inspiration. Always.
What does the connection between manufacturing tradition and contemporary design mean to you?
I respect the procedures like cutting, soldering or other, but I can never make traditional jewelry - I always have to create whatever my inspiration tells me and let the silver take what shape it wants.
Is there a self-portrait piece that speaks most about you?
The self-portrait piece is a ring that I called 'Core'. It seems that it really captures all my shapes and moods.
Which material that you haven’t used yet is a temptation and a challenge for you?
I use all types of materials: wood, stone, metal, silver, leather. I never used gold - except for gold-plating. Maybe I will someday. I don't know. It doesn't really speak to me.
How was the pandemic period for you as a jewelry designer?
It was the start of all this - a blessing - really!
How do you see the future of contemporary jewelry?
As every human is different and every designer has it's own inspiration - I think we are looking at an incredible future for contemporary jewelry. Art is beautiful in all its forms and people like art. So - it's a win-win situation.
