Spot the Designer - Alain Roggeman/ Belgium

What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wanted to do so many things when I was a child, but for quite a long time it was archeology.

When have you started creating jewelry? How did this passion come about?

I started at the age of eighteen at the jewelry school in Brussels. In the beginning it was more a need to do something with the hands and passion came gradually.

What was your first project or significant piece for you and from what point of view?

It’s a long time ago, I don’t have one significant piece but several. This depending of events or important moments during my student and professional life.

How do you charge your batteries? What other passions and creative interests do you have?

I reload my batteries with music, reading, visiting museums, searching stuff on the flea markets.

What does the connection between manufacturing tradition and contemporary design mean to you?

I think that this connection is very important. The know-how, the skills and the knowledge of the traditional design and technique are the elements of the spine of my contemporary creation.

Is there a self-portrait piece that speaks most about you?

There is not really a self portrait piece, those you see here under are quite significant of my work.

Which material have you not yet used is a temptation and a challenge for you?

I never really worked with iron except a few times. I don’t have the skills for it, but everything is a question of opportunity. Patience.

How was the pandemic period for you as a jewelry designer?

Of course, for the business it was not good, but there was time. I designed a collection called “Lockdown 2022” and it was very funny. Here some pictures of the collection.

How do you see the future of contemporary jewelry?

Like every craft or artistic work there is a future, it just needs time.
