Artist Statement

I want to challenge society’s agenda towards mental health by addressing the prejudice and discrimination associated with it and highlight the strength that is needed to come through or indeed live with a mental illness, by creating an open and non-judgemental dialogue. Ireland has one of the highest instances of mental health problems in Europe yet there is still a strong social stigma attached to people with these issues. Through my work I am exploring, challenging and investigating attitudes that mental illness sufferers come across. By taking a series of photos of the institutional buildings of a former mental asylum Grangegorman, Dublin, and transforming them through enamels and porcelain into a small series of brooches. I want to capture the fragile nature of the buildings before they were demolished or rebuilt. The decaying and unstable buildings were comparable to the crumbling minds of its former patients.
