Francesca Guarnieri (Italy/Romania)
FRANCESCA GUARNIERI
Biography:
I was born in a small city in Northern Italy. I studied painting under Luciano Fabro and Alberto Garutti at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 2007. In 2008 I started studying goldsmithing and stone cutting, first in Milan, then in Vigo, Barcelona and Turin. In 2011 I served an apprenticeship with sculptor Fabio Viale. I am now living in a rural area of Romania.
My work is basically focused on the creation of ritual objects, there is no univocal reference to any specific culture, but a mix of everything I’ve been exposed to and a part of randomness. We live in a time of overexposure and overconsumption, we want to get rid of the unwanted as soon as possible. I am really concerned about the life of things, the death of things and how we dispose of them, that is why quite often I work with waste and unused objects. I think everything, including leftovers, deserves the same opportunity to become something else, like an alchemical process. I look at remnants like fetishes, they are more than mere matter, they come already charged with a past and a power, it is matter augmented with extra meaning.
