ADELINA PETCAN
Designer biography:
Adelina Petcan, (b.1994, Bucharest, RO) lives and works in Bucharest. In her practice she deals with jewellery as visual communication and seeks to address the problematics of private and public when it comes to bodily adornment in the social sphere. In 2019 she completed her Masters Degree from Konstfack University of Crafts, Art and Design in Jewellery in Stockholm, Sweden. HUMAN APJ was founded in 2015, a jewellery brand for everyday wear and as platform for different topics to be discussed with a focus on different making processes.
Collection concept:
Naturalia is a jewellery collection playing around the importance of time and human’s intervention in nature. Pouring melted wax can create organic shapes in just under a second only by using the laws of physics. Shapes which can be found in nature, in its purest forms, in trees and plants, or mineral formations or in my workshop, in a fraction of a second. So fast and so instant, more of a repetitive and meditative process in which my hand coordinates with the materials and time. I later paired this process with a slower one, electroforming, enabling me to create lightweight pieces of jewellery. Sunk in a bath for over 48 hours, the wax pieces are coated in silver. Then each piece is contextualized around the body and further crafted into fitting. Just like in nature, the piece fits around the body, in harmony. For this collection I also decided to use pearls, for their similar formation process, slow coating of a trapped particle in the mother mollusk.
