Designer biography:
Contemporia is a design studio established in 2014 by Ioana Streza and Alex Burlacu. The team is now composed of 4 members with backgrounds in the fields of visual arts and architecture who are involved in both the creative and the manufacturing processes. Contemporia jewelry pieces are being made in the studio`s own workshop in small series or as unique pieces, combining traditional crafts, primarily metalsmithing, with contemporary techniques and technologies and experimenting with less conventional materials like wood, plastic, ceramics, textile.
From an aesthetic point of view, the direction of the studio is towards clean, simple, universal shapes that give Contemporia pieces a timeless and universal vibe. The objects are always imagined as extensions for the personality of those who choose to wear them, not just elements that compliment an outfit. They are dedicated to open-minded people, who love art and regard jewelry as an object in which the creator invested first and foremost her soul.
Collection concept:
Kaolin jewelry collection is a melting pot for our artistic searches and creative approaches, our aspirations, contradictions and internal struggles. This is rather a conclusion we drew after completing the pieces and detaching ourselves from the maelstrom of the creative process than the starting point of it. The collection is thus a reconciliation of contrasts: simple yet dynamic white volumes, inspired by vast landscapes, intricate metal elements carefully holding the ceramic pieces, while symmetry refers to human intervention, controlled, rigorous, perhaps even futuristic and technology driven.
The materials chosen were the conscious starting point for Kaolin, we wanted to give them a voice - just by looking at the object you can feel the fragility of the porcelain and the tension and strength of the metal structure. We joined this two primordial, strong and even opposite materials, metal and clay, so different in structure, finish and appearance, to highlight and enrich each other.
