Samantha Sloane - Global Design Graduate Show Award
Samantha Sloane (UK)
Designer biography:
Samantha’s wearable artworks reflect on her past and current lived experiences growing up on the Scottish West coast. By taking inspiration from ‘A Philosophy of Walking’ by Frederic Gros, her jewellery acts as a hybrid between aspects of the landscape and its biodiversity that she encounters on her wanders. Samantha challenges the idea of preciousness by exploring different materials and her use of precious and semi-precious stones. Based in Glasgow, Samantha currently undertakes an Artist in Residence position at the Glasgow School of Art, where she develops her practise and works alongside students on the Silversmithing and Jewellery Design course. Her work has gone on to win several awards, and continues to explore her connection to this place in a variety of new ways.
Collection concept:
"I use occurring forms, such as legs of crustaceans and textures of rock, to create unworldly designs that seem alien-like, but yet are familiar. The mutation between living organisms and natural found objects reflect on my past and present existence, and lead to new realities in the form of jewellery. I enjoy exploring the limits of materials as well as working with metal and developing my knowledge into different casting techniques. I aim to create fun and alluring objects that are tactile and treasured."
