WENYIN JIANG
Designer biography:
Wenyin Jiang is a jewellery designer and gemmologist based between London and Shanghai. Previously an economist, she is trained as a logical thinker. During her study at Central Saint Martins, she found the answer to construct her contemporary ode emotionally and rationally by incorporating electronic components, metal, glass, as well as sound art and gemstone into a wearable art collection she calls “Nibiru”.
Collection concept:
“In the earliest Sumerian writings, the Anunnaki were descendants of An and Ki, the god of the heavens and the goddess of the earth. They were a group of deities of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians and Babylonians, who lived on the planet Nibiru. Nibiru collided catastrophically with Tiamat, located between Mars and Jupiter. Tiamat split in two. Nibiru struck one part on a second pass, which became the asteroid belt. The other part was pushed into a new orbit, which became the Earth. Nibiru swings by our Earth every 3,600 years giving the Anunnaki their only chance to communicate across vast distances.”
Wenyin imagines and creates specific wearable devices for Anunnaki to communicate the vase distance. Nibiru embeds both physical and electronic sounds to set a new standard for individually and artistically designed jewellery stimulating wearers’ multi-sensory perceptions. It also highlights the aesthetic of balance, movements, and gravity.
All the pieces are hand-crafted by herself in the Jewellery and Metal Workshop in London. The origin of borosilicate glass is laboratory glassware which has high dimensional stability and durability and is processed with a diamond wheel and discs. All the metal parts are precisely and carefully made by hand.
