Designer biography:
Elin Weinstein was born on the shores of James Bay in northern Quebec, Canada.
Her grandmother was a collector of fine things. Elin grew up surrounded by beautiful tchotchkes. There is a story Elin's grandmother loved to tell about Elin at age 3. Elin had pulled up a stool early one morning and sat staring into her grandmother's vitrine filled with beautiful object’s d’art. Elin has long been drawn to art.
At 18, Elin moved to Montreal to study anthropology. As a Masters student she conducted fieldwork in Bali; she was drawn to the Balinese concept that some Art is alive, the Art inspired by the Gods. She places her craft at the juncture between cultural scholarship and Living Art.
Elin respects geometry and admires clean lines, while also having a tendency towards complexity. It is this juxtaposition that produces her fundamental of intricate minimalism.
Collection concept:
During a trip to Japan, Elin wandered around Tokyo delighted by the way the vertical neon signs were stacked one on top of the other as they advertised stores. A visit to the Robot Restaurant and her own visceral reaction to the lights and mythological characters in the show solidified her determination to find a way to represent this colourful extravaganza in her art. She turned to acrylic. The idea sat with her for over a year until she felt she had grasped the mechanics of how to turn the band-sawn sheets of acrylic into wearable art.
Marrying the organics of silver as symbolizing nature completes her experience of the juxtaposition of serenity and wildly colourful extravagance in Japan.
