Rebecca Tanda (b.1994) is a visual artist and jewelry artist working primarily with glass. With this material as her focal point, she challenges our material preconceptions and re-imagines our relationship to geography, territory and natural history. She was an artist in residence at Franconia Sculpture Park (2018, USA), the Foundation Fiminco (2020-2021, FR) and at the American Center for Art & Culture Paris (2021-2022, FR). Recent exhibitions include the Ireland Glass Biennale 2023 and at KhaOs Gallery, Barcelona.
Collection concept:
In this collection, “compasses to elsewhere’’ I have created round, magnetic backed brooches that have both raised glass ornaments as well as negative space. These brooches evoke the visual qualities of compasses and other way finding apparatuses, but also a surreal material language. The silicone base is adorned with glass, thread and glass beads, among other materials. In so doing, some of the oldest and newest material commodities meet to create unique pieces of adornment. My work at large uses glass flameworking & pâte-de-verre glass fusing techniques. I juxtapose the glass with different materials to create ornaments and jewellery to explore material preconceptions.
