Spot the Designer - Huda Mahdi
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Since I was young I have dreamed of creating my own pieces, mainly jewelry and clothes.
When did you start creating jewelry? How did this passion come about?
I started in May of 2023, my passion has always been there as a kid until now.
What was the first project or significant piece for you and from what point of view?
As my primary profession is a hair stylist I wanted to make a piece that incorporates my love for both professions so I came up with the idea of a ring that has a braided band to represent hair braids and I think it turned out as a perfect example of my work.
How do you charge your batteries? What other passions and creative interests do you have?
My batteries are always charged because my passions keep fueling them. When it comes to my passions, I would say anything that can be created by hand, such as jewelry making, fashion design and sewing.
What does the connection between manufacturing tradition and contemporary design mean to you?
I have always loved adding a touch of the past and the present when creating a new design to keep the past unforgotten.
Is there a self-portrait piece that speaks most about you? Tell us the story. + photo
I would have to say that the piece that speaks most about me is the Baghdad ring that I made as I am from Al-Adhamiyah which is a district in Baghdad and I wanted to honor that.
Which material you have not yet used is a temptation and a challenge?
I have yet to try using diamonds and I think that would be a fun new challenge to face.
How do you see the future of contemporary jewelry?
In its most beautiful and glamorous state.
