Spot the Designer - Lucian Popescu/ Romania

What did you want to be when you were a child?

Being fascinated by wilderness from an early age, I first wanted to be a shepherd and later a ranger. After encountering a 3d software in high school, I start dreaming of becoming a car designer.

When have you started creating jewelry? How did this passion come about?

When I was a child, I created my first chain and pendant from twisted copper wire and two rings from a copper pipe. My second attempt to create jewelry came about 3 years ago after I started experimenting with 3d printing.

What was your first project or significant piece for you and from what point of view?

I think "Pandov Chess" is one of the key projects in which I started my approach to sculpting and 3d printing.

How do you charge your batteries? What other passions and creative interests do you have?

I immerse myself in the forest quite often. Also, I enjoy snowboarding and mountain biking.

What does the connection between manufacturing tradition and contemporary design mean to you?

I think tradition is very important to enrich our view on the subject.

Is there a self-portrait piece that speaks most about you?

I have an illustration done with a usual ball pen and digitally colored that best describes me.

Which material have you not yet used is a temptation and a challenge for you?

I would like to experiment with wood and random intricate stones.

How was the pandemic period for you as a jewelry designer?

It was a prolific and introspective period. That was the period when I started Pandov Jewelry.

How do you see the future of contemporary jewelry?

I am thinking of new materials and kinetic jewelry.
