Biography:
Anna Butwell is a contemporary jewelry artist currently based in Berlin, Germany. Originally from New York, Anna has worked out of the Volksluxus Goldsmith Collective since 2017. In addition to creating one of a kind exhibition pieces, she also creates small collections for everyday wear and teaches a range of jewelry workshops.
Her work explores a perception of beauty that is imperfect and transient- essentially Japanese Wabi Sabi- with a modern punk rock aesthetic. All of her collections are left slightly rough, showing the imperfections of the hand of the maker.
Collection Concept: Chaos XXX
Chaos XXX is a further study on an earlier body of work exploring guttural and responsive human emotion in jewelry form, namely by stamping the word “fuck” repeatedly onto sand cast pieces. I have expanded on this idea both in taking objects that the benign use of became taboo in 2020, and in adapting traditional jewelry styles. The cocktail ring has been updated and expanded upon, integrating said guttural emotion (the word fuck) into the surface design of the pieces while utilizing the organic process of one-off casting.
