SCHMUCKVIRUS
Biography:
Su Kroker is a master silversmith and jewelry designer. After her apprenticeship as a silversmith she decided to both widen and deepen her experience by working in a number of studios. Of these, the most valuable was with a restorer at the Dom of Trier. After this her interested curiosity led her to study Metal and Jewellery Design at HAWK in Hildesheim, Germany. Whilst studying at HAWK Su gained an internship in the Netherlands, where she still lives today.
The work Su makes is particularly inspired by textile like techniques which embody strength with fragility. Her crocheted objects explore this in a sensuous tactile manner.
Su Krokers work can be described as fragile, magical, sculptural. Once you are hooked, this kind of jewelry will never let you go. She always starts working from a deep basic feeling, like hope, pain, fear, love. Nature and her endless variation of shapes and colors are her inspiration, as well as catholic relics and the architecture of medieval monasteries.
Collection Concept: The Absence
The jewelry I show is a work about the missing of my husband, who died of cancer 3 years ago. Its about the pain, the absence and the walk through the darkest time of my life. For me it’s a way to deal with the pain and I tried to express the burning, hurting missing feeling. As the same time tried to change it into a universal image, to find a translation, which is not private, but of course personal. Its about row and missing, as the same time about hope and going forward. The Absence and the intensity of transport intense feelings into objects from silver/silversmithing is part of all my work: installation, objects and jewelry.
My work is translating the sketches, the lightness and randomness ..into a work in silver, bronze, copper, pearls and hematite using the silversmith techniques, as the same time, destroying this techniques, in order to develop my own language.
