Designer biography:
Otilia Fiastru is a jeweler and graphic designer. She graduated from The National University of Architecture and Urbanism ”Ion Mincu” in 2002 and is a graphic designer since 2001. She works as an art director on both commercial and cultural projects, such as The National Museum of Art, The National Center of Dance Bucharest, and The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Salonul de Proiecte. She works in print and book design of different genres and styles, novels, graphic novels, art books, and exhibition and performance materials. In 2013 she founded the contemporary jewelry brand Oval and works as a designer and maker. Oval creations were distinguished with MNAC Award in Autor Contemporary Jewellery Fair 2014 and with The Special Accessory Design Award during IFS 2016, at London Fashion Week.
Collection concept:
With “LETTERS” series OVAL exhibits an intimate process of figuring out communication tools. This series explores the physicality of words, letters, and different types of writing, without concerning the symbol and the meaning of those things we do care to tell each other. It is nonconceptual and rather shape work, just as signs and letters are in their core, the core that allows us to fill in with whatever. OVAL objectifies letters and alphabets and slightly ponders through design and some studio time on the many possibilities a glyph has to offer as a simple item.
