Susie Heuberger
Biography:
I’m Susie Heuberger I was born in Mexico City and I am half Mexican half, German. I see in jewelry a way of self-expression, like a way to put my thoughts and feelings in a material and visual way, where my choose of materials; mostly organic. helps me to tell the story about the piece. My work process is almost meditative, most of the techniques that I choose for my pieces included an extensive amount of repetitive work which allowed me to have a special connection with each piece. My Mexican roots are often my main source of inspiration.
Collection concept:
Death in Mexican culture is the core of my thesis. In Mexican culture, death has been constantly present. From pre-Hispanic times when it was a vital part of the cycle of life, until today in its festive and colorful representation through the Day of the Dead. But how does the perception of death change in a country where injustice and violent death reign? In my thesis I wanted to move away from the clichés and the typical figures associated with Mexican death, such as the “Catrinas” and the sugar skulls. In my work, death is reflected in its rawest and most real form. Feminicides, clandestine graves, mutilated bodies, thousands of nameless corpses and the feeling of an open wound that does not heal. All this became the "inspiration" behind my work.
