Designer biography:

Kat, the creative force behind the jewellery brand Fire and Fae, handcrafts unique sterling silver jewellery from her home studio in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Using recycled solid sterling silver and ethically sourced fossils and gemstones, every piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Inspired by Ireland’s untamed coastlines, faery lore, travel and Kat’s own rebellious spirit, every piece of jewellery is a reflection of the exploratory process of the maker. Kat has been designing and making silver jewellery since 2020, after taking a series of metalsmithing courses online.

Collection concept:

The Blackthorn Collection

This collection draws its inspiration from Irish folklore and mythology - specifically the blackthorn tree - with symbology deeply connected to the faery world. The blackthorn is significant because of its inherent duality. On the one hand it is a symbol for strength, overcoming adversity, purification and protection. On the other hand, it is also considered a trickster, bad luck if crossed and easily used as a weapon in the wrong hands. The blackthorn is associated with death, battles and transformation. This can be seen in the three colours that are found in it - red (of the sap) represents blood, the white of the flowers represents the spirit and the black of the bark represents death. Because of this, the tree is closely associated with the Triple Goddess, and is especially sacred to the Irish Goddess, the Morrígan, who oversees matters of war, death and sexuality. My interpretation of the blackthorn was to produce pieces that are organic in form, represent strength, and are to be worn as a talisman.

Organic: I produced a selection of slender spikes (the thorn of the tree) oxidised to make each piece darker and more dramatic, underlining the connection with the faery realm and the striking dark bark of the tree.

Strength: The spikes signify strength; and I have paired them with a carefully curated selection of gemstones in keeping with the red, black and white theme for the Triple Goddess.

Talisman: Traditionally a blackthorn staff (called a shillelagh) carried at night or placed beside the bed, was a protection from faery mischief.

The pieces in this collection are produced as protective amulets or talismans - worn for protection and good luck.
