Designer biography:
Tyana Verstraete (°1999, Belgium) is a young interdisciplinary artist with a curious personality that activates a strong sense perseverance. Her proactive and determined attitude enables her to challenge obstacles and hereby expand skills and expertise. This year, Tyana earned her master’s degree in jewellery design. Currently, she is undertaking an internship in Sweden, focusing on glassblowing, which was her initial area of study. This internship will last until February 2025. Tyana’s goal is to merge her expertise in jewellery design and glassblowing, creating innovative and unique pieces that reflect her diverse talents and artistic vision.
Collection concept:
Inspired by the natural materials in her surroundings, Tyana explores a creative journey to transform an oyster into a unique piece of hair jewellery. Her work explores the ways in which personal stories can be communicated through jewellery, with hair serving as the common thread that ties her creations together. This artistic process is deeply interactive, involving a continuous cycle of doing, observing and reflecting. In this way she is able to refine her techniques and push the boundaries of the material to a new unique jewel.
Her approach begins with collecting the shells from the coast at her home town too later on carefully reshape and grind the material away. Reflecting on her movements and seeking for a way to innovate and express her artistic vision she later combines the shell with silver. A transformation to reconnect back to the base of jewellery; silver. Resulting in a unique and evocative personal object and a jewel with its own story to tell. It is an expression of identity, memory and connection.
