Designer biography:

Liu Yang is a jewelry designer from Xinjiang in China. The mineral treasures of her home region inspired Liu's interest in exploring the nature of mineral aggregates to broaden the opportunities for creating organic and geometric jewellery. In pursuit of a deeper understanding of minerals and gems, Liu completed her undergraduate degree in gemmology in Moscow before joining MA Design; Ceramics, Furniture, Jewellery at Central Saint Martins. Yang's artistry profoundly honors the essence of minerals through her distinctive and entrancing approach to jewelry design. She delves deep into the mineral kingdom, shining a light on those mineral families that the mainstream often neglects or undervalues. Yang finds beauty and significance in their uniqueness and the complex, interdependent relationships they foster within nature.

Collection concept:

Employing innovative techniques such as 3D printing in silver, wax sculpting, and precision cutting of gemstones with CNC machinery, Yang crafts a collection of jewelry that celebrates the natural imperfections of minerals. Her pieces reveal the beauty of cracks, inclusions, and the natural asymmetry of gemstones, mirroring nature's spontaneous formations yet underlined by the minerals' inherently ordered atomic makeup. This juxtaposition draws parallels with Brutalist architecture's raw, monumental forms and its reverence for the unrefined, encapsulating a balance between chaos and order, drama and solidity, inviting onlookers into a realm of discovery and marvel.
