Designer biography:

Tomas Miskovic has been a jeweler for over 20 years. After a start in fine jewelry, he quickly found his passion for art jewelry, winning several awards for his designs and techniques. With the label "unexpected jewelry", he attempts to break the rules of "ordinary" jewelry and of the expected. Each piece is an experiment in pushing the boundaries of the craft and attempting to re-invent what jewelry can be. At the same time, he wants to stay true to his roots in traditional goldsmithing, using established materials - gold, sterling silver, precious stones – and techniques.

Collection concept:

I continued working on the Shelter/Heritage Collection, adding stones and exploring new designs that express the idea of instinctively protecting that which is inside us.  In Shelter/Heritage edition, I examined aspects of my identity, especially my connection to my roots – to my family, our traditions, and the village I grew up in – what I would consider my truest self. Living in the city and following my own path, I realize how omnipresent the connection to our traditions continues to be. In ways big and small, it is always there, dictating my choices and behaviours, sometimes in ways I do not fully understand. To visually create the connection to tradition, I used the bird, a common folk symbol. Cut out of metal instead of embroidered on textile and encased in a geometric shape, I aimed to bring these symbols into my craft and into the present.
